Step by step preparation instruction guide

Step 1: Gather the ingredients and tools

  • Kava root powder or kava tea bags
  • Water (preferably filtered or spring water)
  • Muslin cloth or a fine-mesh strainer
  • Large bowl or a kava bowl
  • Optional: Coconut milk, honey, or sweetener of your choice for flavoring

Step 2: Measure the ingredients

  • For a single serving, use approximately 2 tablespoons of kava root powder or 2 kava tea bags.
  • Adjust the amount based on your desired potency and the instructions on the packaging.

Step 3: Prepare the kava mixture

  • If you’re using kava root powder, place the powder in a large bowl.
  • Gradually add warm water (around 120°F or 49°C) to the kava powder, stirring and kneading it with your hands or a spoon. Aim for a consistency similar to muddy water.
  • Continue kneading and squeezing the mixture for about 10-15 minutes to extract the kavalactones, which are the active compounds in kava.

Step 4: Strain the kava mixture

  • Place a muslin cloth or fine-mesh strainer over another large bowl or kava bowl.
  • Pour the kava mixture into the cloth or strainer, allowing the liquid to pass through while capturing the solid particles.
  • Squeeze the cloth or strainer to extract as much liquid as possible. This liquid is your kava tea.

Step 5: Optional Flavor and dilute the kava tea

  • If you prefer a milder taste, you can add coconut milk or another liquid of your choice to the kava tea. This step is entirely optional.
  • You can also add sweeteners like honey or sugar to enhance the flavor, although traditionally, kava is not sweetened.

Step 6: Serve and enjoy

  • Pour the strained kava tea into cups or small bowls.
  • Kava is often served in a communal setting, so consider sharing it with friends or family.
  • Sip the kava slowly and savor its effects. Note that kava has a relaxing and calming effect, so it’s best enjoyed in a relaxed environment.

It’s important to note that kava affects individuals differently, and its effects can vary depending on factors such as the quality of the kava, preparation method, and personal tolerance. It’s recommended to start with a small serving and gradually increase if desired, while also paying attention to how your body responds to it.
